National Skin Care Awareness Month

Listen Up! What is your skin telling you?

Skincare is not a one-size fits all. With so many different skin types and even more skin needs, it’s so important to choose skin care that is tailored to YOU! Our skin is the largest organ in our body and it has a set of very specialised functions, which makes it all the more important to get to know it and choose the right products to use daily.

Let’s start with your skin type:

Dry skin can include redness, stiffness and flaking. Dry skin feels tight if you don’t moisturise or put on something hydrating regularly! It can look dull, with more visible lines and rough patches.

Oily skin usually looks greasy or shiny. This often results in breakouts and blackheads with enlarged pores similar to orange peel. This skin type is a result of excess sebum production!

Combination skin usually manifests as excess sebum around the nose, on the forehead or on the chin (T-Zone). People with this skin type often have both acne and dry patches at the same time, requiring slightly different care in different areas.

Normal Skin - all hail the people with normal skin types! Probably the least problematic of them all, those with normal skin tend to have a balanced complexion that needs protecting rather than making any adjustments.

It’s worth noting that your skin type can change at any point! It is rare for a skin type to remain the same throughout a person’s entire life.

Once you know which skin type you are, it is best to understand any concerns you have on top of this which can either be as a result of your skin type or simply an additional factor:

Sensitive Skin

This concern can cause blemishes, acne and dry skin which often responds poorly to products. Anyone with this skin concern finds it very difficult and anxiety-inducing to try anything different because of the fear of how their skin may react!

Ageing Skin

Skin starts losing collagen at around age 25, this is when we start to see fine lines and wrinkles, crows feet and a change in elasticity among other things. From 30 onwards, these start to deepen and increase. It is highly important to use anti-ageing ingredients as early as your 20’s because prevention is much better than cure!

Hyperpigmentation, Sun Damage and Acne Scarring

All of these things can cause a variation in the skin tone leaving your complexion looking uneven. Whilst this is very common, we know how frustrating it can be!

Medical Concerns

Things like eczema, acne, cellulitis, hormone imbalances and rosacea are all an example of medical concerns which cause things like dryness, acne, hyperpigmentation and scarring. It is important to understand if you may have any of these which could be causing problems with your skin, your doctor may be able to help in these instances.

What other factors affect your skin?

Genetics

Diet

Water consumption

Exercise

Digestive health

Skincare products used

Weather

Hormone imbalances / fluctuations

Medications

Substances
